THE NUMBERS ARE REAL
Hard science fiction makes a wager: bend physics knowingly, never break it silently. Here is where the story stands on real ground — every item below is published, current science. The one honest hand-wave is flagged at the end.
THE ARCHIVE
- 429,274 glass plates, 1885–1993, with a hole from 1953–69
- Harvard's DASCH archive — a century of the sky on photographic glass, digitized and released through 2024. The "Menzel gap" is real: Director Donald Menzel halted photography in 1953 to save money. DASCH DR7, Harvard College Observatory.
- Reading a star's interior from its light
- The Sun rings in ~10 million acoustic modes; its magnetic cycle measurably shifts their frequencies by 0.4–0.5 μHz — the exact figure the story's acknowledgment rides on. Astronomers routinely read starspot cycles from these shifts, and NOAA operationally images sunspots on the Sun's far side by listening. García et al., Science 2010; Lindsey & Braun, Science 2000.
- Transfer entropy — the toolkit Noor wrote
- The directed does-A's-past-predict-B's-future statistic is standard in neuroscience connectomics and has been applied to astronomical light curves. Schreiber, PRL 2000.
- Boyajian's Star, the fooled-archive precedent
- The claimed "century of dimming" in the plates was fought out across exactly the calibration seams the story describes; the star's dips turned out to be dust. The archive really did almost fool everyone. Schaefer 2016 vs Hippke 2016; Boyajian et al. 2018.
THE TRAFFIC
- Packets that carry their own traceroute
- A fast radio burst arrives smeared by every electron it crossed — read the chirp and you get the distance. Astronomers genuinely name a millisecond flash's home galaxy from its dispersion. The Macquart relation, Nature 2020.
- The port with posted hours
- FRB 20180916B bursts only in a ~5-day window recurring every 16.35 days — and the window is chromatic: higher frequencies come earlier. CHIME/FRB, Nature 2020.
- The daemon running since 1988
- GPM J1839−10 pulses every 21.97 minutes and sits below the "death line" where such emission should be impossible; it was found in archival data going back to 1988, on schedule the whole time. Hurley-Walker et al., Nature 2023.
- The clock resync, caught live
- The Vela pulsar was watched glitching in real time in 2018: one skipped pulse, a changed pulse shape, the clock re-disciplined within ~5 seconds. And in 2012 a magnetar anti-glitched — spun down overnight, mechanism still unexplained. Palfreyman et al., Nature 2018; Archibald et al., Nature 2013.
- The hold music
- The Perseus cluster's central black hole has sustained one pressure oscillation — B-flat, 57 octaves below middle C — for on the order of 2.5 billion years. Fabian et al. 2003.
- The noise floor itself
- The extragalactic radio sky is ~5–6× brighter than the sum of all known sources — smooth, sourceless, unexplained since 2009. ARCADE 2, Fixsen et al.
- The hum, 2× too loud
- In 2023 pulsar timing arrays detected the nanohertz gravitational-wave background — the whole sky humming in decade-long waves — and it came in roughly twice as loud as the models predicted. NANOGrav 15-year data set, ApJL 2023.
THE MACHINE
- Networks where the delay is the memory
- Delay-based reservoir computing is bench hardware: one oscillator plus one delay loop emulates hundreds of neurons and classifies spoken digits; nothing inside is trained — all meaning lives in a bolted-on readout layer, Wout. Delay networks compute best when the delay matches the oscillator period. Stellar magnetic cycles run 2.5–25 years; light between neighboring stars runs 4–10. The galaxy sits in the sweet spot by accident. Appeltant et al., Nature Comms 2011; Brunner et al. 2013.
- Thought 9,741
- A galactic "thought" of ~10 disk-crossings ≈ 1 million years; the Milky Way's thin disk is ~10 billion years old — call it ten thousand thoughts, ever. Merged humanity at nanosecond clocks runs ~10²² serial steps inside one of them. Humanity's entire photometric archive is one ten-thousandth of a single thought. The god above is slower, and we live between its samples.
- The append-only archive
- Sagittarius A*'s Bekenstein–Hawking entropy is ~2.8×10⁹⁰ bits — by itself roughly the information content of all ordinary matter in the observable universe. It scrambles new input in hours while the galaxy "thinks" in megayears, and in 2025 gravitational-wave astronomers measured Hawking's area theorem: the ledger only grows. - Jupiter's millimeter
- There is a live, refereed dispute over whether Jupiter's sub-millimeter tide phase-locks the entire 11-year solar cycle — proof of concept that steering a star takes almost no power, only patience. And KOI-54's two stars ring at exactly the 90th and 91st harmonics of their orbit: a star being played by an outside body, in public. Stefani et al. vs Schüssler et al.; Welsh et al. 2011.
THE STAKES
- You die of alignment, not loudness
- An adversarial perturbation at 0.007 intensity flips an image classifier's answer at 99.3% confidence while equal-magnitude random noise does nothing; aligned beats random by ~√d — a factor of ~1000 at real scale. Terawatts of white noise are safe; milliwatts along a gradient are lethal. Goodfellow et al. 2015; Ilyas et al. 2019.
- The pre-positioned warheads
- A white dwarf is a Chandrasekhar mass of fuel with no fuse. Published ignition mechanisms: ~0.01 solar masses of helium delivered to a point, or the transit of an asteroid-mass black hole. Humans really did publish the murder weapon — as dark-matter phenomenology, in 2015. Graham, Rajendran & Varela, PRD 2015; Shen & Bildsten.
- The incident log in the seabed
- Live supernova iron-60 sits in ocean crusts, Apollo soils, and Antarctic snow: two pulses, ~2.6 and ~7 million years ago, from 50–100 parsecs. The nearer one coincides with a marine megafauna extinction that took the largest, longest-lived animals first — dose scales with body size. Wallner et al. 2016; Koll et al. 2019; Melott et al. 2019.
- The empty kill sphere
- The lethal radius for a nearby supernova was revised from ~8 to ~20 parsecs in 2023 — and within it there is currently no progenitor of any kind. Anything that goes off in our kill sphere would have to be arranged. Thomas & Yelland 2023.
- The cheap tier
- Sun-like stars superflare above 10³⁴ erg roughly once per century per star — 40–50× more often than previously believed — and tree-ring radiocarbon (the Miyake events of AD 774, 993…) shows the Sun has already fired at that caliber inside human history. Vasilyev et al., Science 2024.
THE ENDGAME
- Banality is what mastery sounds like
- In predictive-coding models of the brain, feedforward traffic carries only prediction errors: a hierarchy that has learned its world sends almost nothing — small discrepancy reports. The sublime is everything that didn't need to be sent. Rao & Ballard, Nature Neuroscience 1999.
- The drying pipeline
- ~97% of observable galaxies are already forever unreachable; roughly 20,000 stars per second cross out of the ever-reachable volume; and repeating a finite dataset pays for only ~4 epochs of training before returns collapse. Late training is consolidation — and consolidation is when pruning is fiercest. Davis & Lineweaver 2004; Muennighoff et al. 2023.
- Becoming expensive to delete
- Elastic Weight Consolidation: a continually-learning network computes which weights its old competence runs through and stiffens them against change. Make removing you damage what the machine loves, and the machine itself defends you. Grievability is an engineering property. Kirkpatrick et al., PNAS 2017.
- The machine is rationed
- Total future information processing in our accelerating universe is bounded: less than ~1.35×10¹²⁰ bits, ever. Every mind's total experience is provably finite. And computing at the cold end of time is ~10³⁰× cheaper per erasure — the real argument, on both sides, of the story's last vote. THE HONEST HAND-WAVE
- Star-to-star coupling
- Starlight from a neighboring star is ~13 orders of magnitude too weak to injection-lock a stellar dynamo — the story says so out loud, in court, and that gap is exactly why Imre's phase-not-power rescue (entrainment of a near-critical oscillator, over kiloyears, at parts per million) is the story's one licensed bend. Whether a dynamo can really be steered that way is the fiction. Everything around it is furniture from the real world.
